Initially when tata in 1954 entered the commercial vehicle sector (trucks) in a joint venture with daimler benz of Germany, thier first to roll of the production line in 1960 was a copy of a daimler benz truck ( same component)
After making it big in the commerical vehicle sector in India, the company decided to enter the passenger vehicle market in the early 90's, launching the tata sierra ( jeep)and the latter (one of india's most popular small cars) the tata indica. The diesel engines that were used in theese cars were in fact developed in collaboration with Cummins engine company.
The success of the indica meant that tata could expand thier brand portfolio and house a group of well known international marques such as jaguar, Land Rover and formerly daewoo. Which has led to its rapid reputation as india's largest and most popular car manufacturer
As you may known that although the engines are in fact badge engineered to be tata. Like the PSA group ( Peugeot and Citroen ) they use shared technology, meaning that at the moment thier engines will most likely be developed using the research and development gained from owning well known british marques such as jaguar and Land Rover and likewise jaguar and land rover will have shared components with tata such as its engines and some strcutural aspects
