The New England Merchants did trade, and trade was very important. Without trade there would be no vast resources that people needed greatly. These were the people who eventually became wealthier. As in all societies, the wealthiest tend to become the leaders. Their wealth is owed to the goods that were provided in the years of British rule (due to taxes) and during the revolution (due to the shortage of goods available from Europe). In some cases, they had owned merchant vessels or ships and they became wealthy through trade, collecting or selling rare items, or partaking in successful businesses. One of the most successful was the slave trade which became known as the "Triangular Trade", because of the merchant ships traveling in a triangle from New England to Africa to the Bahamas and then back. Ultimately, everyone looked up to them, and with that, they took a stand and became a leader of society.
