The dime is the American coin valued at ten (10) cents; one tenth of a dollar. Each United States coin bears the image of a person.

The dime bears the image of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The dime is the thinnest of United States coins and smallest minted for circulation.

A portrait of Franklin Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States, appears on the front of the US dime.

Did you know that nowhere on the dime does it state its actual value in cents or dollars?

CorrectionThe word "dime" IS the coin's denomination. The dime was intended to be a separate unit in a 10-based coinage system which included mills, eagles, and unions in addition to the familiar dollars and cents:

10 mills = 1 cent

10 cents = 1 dime

10 dimes = 1 dollar

10 dollars = 1 eagle

10 eagles = 1 union

Mills and unions were never used, and eagles were only used for gold coins. People found it easier to express prices simply in dollars and cents, so the denominations "dime" and "eagle" exist only in the names of those coins.
