No American soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for the battle of Iwo Jima, largely because no American soldiers fought the battle of Iwo Jima. (Marines get really mad if you call them soldiers, and Iwo Jima was a Marine action.) Twenty-three Marines and four sailors earned the Medal of Honor for this battle. Fourteen of the Medals were earned posthumously--the recipient died doing his heroic action. Only eighty-two Marines earned the Medal in all of World War II.

Is it true that no Marine can be awarded or considered for the Medal of Honor if they throw themselves on an grenade no matter how many lives they save?

No, that is not true. I have read the citations of many Marines have been awarded the Medal of Honor for that very action. First and foremost, I want to make it very clear that one does not try to get the Medal of Honor, but rather it is awarded to them for incredibly brave acts above and beyond the call of duty. If a Marine throws themselves on a grenade then they are doing it to protect their fellow marines, not to try to get the Medal of Honor or any other medal for that matter. If a Marine or any other service memeber does something heroic, they are doing it to protect their fellow servicemen/women or to save innocent lives, they never do it to try to get medals.
