The British Empire was a group of around 50 countries which were ruled by Britain for around 200 years until the middle of the 20th century. At its height in the late 19th century, 25% of the world's land surface was ruled by Britain. Most of the original 50 countries are now independent but are still part of the Commonwealth of Nations and some (like Australia, Canada and New Zealand) have voluntarily retained Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State.
