By most accounts, the first woman prime minister in the world was Sirimavo Bandaranaike; she became Prime Minister of Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon) in 1960. Among other women to hold this office in the 1960s were Indira Gandhi, who became Prime Minister of India in 1966, and Golda Meir, who became Prime Minister of Israel in 1969. England got its first female Prime Minister in 1979 (and the first of any government in Europe), when Margaret Thatcher was elected. As for Canada, it only had one female Prime Minister and she served only six months in that office, from late June to early November 1993.
New Zealand's first female Prime Minister was Jenny Shipley. She held office from December 1997 to December 1999. However, she was not elected to office, becoming Prime Minister only after replacing Jim Bolger as head of the governing party.
The first and, to date, the only woman prime minister in Australia is Julia Gillard.
Julia Eileen Gillard became the first prime minister of Australia on 24 June 2010, after a leadership challenge saw the resignation of the then-Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. She served until mid 2013, when falling support led to another leadership ballot, which she lost to Kevin Rudd.

Therefore, there have been 27 different people who served as Prime Minister. Julia Gillard is the 32nd Prime Minister, but the 27th different Prime Minister.
