1. George Washington
--Led the Continental Army to victory over the Kingdom of Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783).
--He presided over the Philadelphia Convention that drafted the United States Constitution in 1787.
--Washington avoided the temptation of war and began a decade of peace with Britain via the Jay Treaty in 1795
--He supported plans to build a strong central government by funding the national debt, implementing an effective tax system, and creating a national bank.
--His unilateral Proclamation of Neutrality of 1793 provided a basis for avoiding any involvement in foreign conflicts.
2. John Adams
--He represented the Continental Congress in Europe. He was a major negotiator of the eventual peace treaty with Great Britain, and chiefly responsible for obtaining the loans from the Amsterdam money market necessary for the conduct of the Revolution.
--In February 1799, Adams stunned the country by sending diplomat William Vans Murray on a peace mission to France. Napoleon, realizing the animosity of the United States was doing no good, signaled his readiness for friendly relations. The Treaty of Alliance of 1778 was superseded and the United States could now be free of foreign entanglements
3. Thomas Jefferson
--Author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (1779, 1786)

4. James Madison
--Another principal author of the Declaration
5. James Monroe
--His administration was marked by the acquisition of Florida (1819) and and the profession of the Monroe Doctrine (1823), declaring U.S. opposition to European interference in the Americas
6. John Quincy Adams
--As president he proposed a grand program of modernization and educational advancement (but was unable to get it through Congress.)
--During his term, he worked on developing the American System, consisting of a high tariff to support internal improvements such as road-building, and a national bank to encourage productive enterprise and form a national currency.
--Proposals adopted: Cumberland Road into Ohio with surveys for its continuation west to St. Louis; the beginning of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, the construction of the Delaware and Chesapeake Canal and the Portland to Louisville Canal around the falls of the Ohio; the connection of the Great Lakes to the Ohio River system in Ohio and Indiana; and the enlargement and rebuilding of the Dismal Swamp Canal in North Carolina.
7. Andrew Jackson
--He was also military governor of Florida (1821), commander of the American forces at the Battle of New Orleans (1815), and the eponym of the era of Jacksonian democracy.
--In 1835, Jackson managed to reduce the federal debt to only $33,733.05, the lowest it has been since the first fiscal year of 1791.
John Hanson, Elias Boudinot, Thomas Mifflin, Richard Henry Lee, Nathan Gorman, Arthur St. Clair and Cyrus Griffin were the first 7 presidents under the Articles of Confederation.
