In the US Presidential election of 1864, incumbent President Abraham Lincoln was not nominated for re-election by the Republican Party, which instead chose John C. Frémont. Republican supporters of Lincoln formed the National Union Party, and Lincoln won the election after Fremont withdrew. The Democratic Party had nominated George B. McClellan, a former Union General who had been replaced by Lincoln during the war.
The Union party included Democrats as well as Republicans, so that Lincoln's choice for Vice President (replacing Hannibal Hamlin) was Andrew Johnson, a Democratic senator from Tennessee.
The major party candidates were Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican, governor of Ohio) and Samuel J. Tilden (Democrat, governor of New York). Minor party candidates included Peter Cooper (Greenback Party) Green Clay Smith (Prohibition Party) and James B. Walker (American National Party)
The two were Rutherford Birchard Hayes and Samuel Jones Tilden. In a highly disputed election, Hayes won with 185 electoral votes to Tilden's 184, though Tilden won the popular vote 4,288,546 to 4,034,311.
Incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant (R-IL) ran against former U.S. Representative Horace Greeley (D-NY). However, in late November of 1872, a few weeks after the public voting and a few weeks before the electoral votes were cast, Horace Greeley died. As a result the Democratic electors ended up casting their presidential votes for five different Democrats, including three votes for Greeley that were thrown out. Pres. Grant would have been the clear winner either way.
