His land and colony, The Red River Colony, was with many others purchased by Canada from the Hudson Bay Company. Canada acted like the land was empty of people, which is always best when colonising new lands.Riel was one of the leaders of the local government in today's Manitoba. Canada was forced to negotiate with the locals creating the province of Manitoba. Canada also used troops to do some of the negotiating so Riel and others fled to the States. But Canada had little intention of actually following through with the promises made when they created Manitoba and things got much worst for many locals, in particular the Indians and Metis. So Riel returned a few years later and helped in another rebellion. That one killed many more people and saw Riel arrested. He was hanged by Canada for treason.Riel is famous for fighting against Canada, dying for the cause, and creating the province of Manitoba.

Louis Riel was the reason Manitoba was created. The metis were being treated unfairly so Louis Riel made a petition to make this happen and surprisingly it happened. Although it couldn't just happen instantly, it took alot of courage to make this happen, you needed to get a petition started and create a list of rights for the province and the people that will live in it like all provinces. Although it wasn't a very big piece of land, the metis and other people still appreciated it. anonymous.
