At the time that other countries enlarged their empires by colonizing other countries, the US still had the whole western part of what now is the US to 'colonize'. And instead of acquiring other countries, they acquired New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana.

At the time the US began to get interested in acquiring new lands outside the US, all the available countries had already been taken by the great European powers. So they had to content themselves with a few remaining places like Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
