My check engine light on my 2002 Rav 4 came on, and I found myself trying to repair it through a service station outside of the dealer. I drove it for one day and then my check engine light came on again! The code was PO420 which is the catalytic converter. In doing some research on the internet, I found that there is a service bulletin from Toyota that addresses this problem. I called Toyota myself to verify that this in fact is true and was told yes it is. The warranty for this problem is 8 years/80,000 miles. I was told it is a common problem and involves reprogramming the on board computer. The procedure calls for reprogramming the computer and returning it to the customer. About 50% of the cases the check engine light will come on again with the same code, if that happens the catalytic converter is replaced. This also has a warranty period of 8 years/80,000 miles mandated by the federal emission control warranty (in the US).
