Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic and I could not find this answer anywhere on the internet. But I did just replace my distributor on a 2002 Astro with a Vortec 4.3 liter. When I looked from the bottom of the engine I saw a pointer on the block (arrow). I used this to find TDC on number 1 cylinder. Afterwards, I noticed from the top that there is a "V" notch for alignment. My best guess is that if you use the arrow, use the first mark (my engine rotated clockwise). And if you use the notch, use the second mark. It probably depends on the vehicle the engine is in. As for the distributor, there is a square notch on the part that rotates (with the rotor removed) that must line up with the arrow on the distributor housing somewhere around the two o'clock position. Getting the oil pump slot to align with the tang at the bottom of the distributor can be tricky.
located on the cam shafts there are two marks one on each that have to be aligned!
There should be advance marks on the harmonic balancer, and timing marks on both timing chain gears.
On my 2000 Metro with a 1.3L the mark and slot marked with the "E" are used.
Get a manual on your car from DISCOUNTAUTOREPAIRMANUALS.COM. and it will heip on future repairs.
there are two kinds of timing marks. one is for ignition timing and one for valve timing.
Look at the plate behind the cam gears and u will find Two marks in between the gears.one has an e and the other an I. Line the pulleys with the Marks
Check if you have secondary timing marks installed. Mine are bolted to the oil pan and easily accessible from the bottom. Instead of using cyl #1 for setting the timing, you will have to use #5 or #8 (to make up for the 90 degrees offset to the factory timing marks
timing for 302 small blockthere is two small marks on the two timing weels line them up and your good to go
Yes The 4.2 liter V6 engine has ( 1 ) timing CHAIN The 4.6 and 5.4 liter V8 engines have ( 1 ) timing CHAIN to each cylinder head ( for a total of two timing chains )
On the crankshaft - located between the two belt pulleys, there are marks cut into the pulley wheel itself. The WHITE mark signifies TDC, and the ones marked in RED are the timing marks.
The timing is set by aligning the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys with the crankshaft pulley. The easiest way is to use the markings on the timing belt. Then turn the engine by hand through 2 revolutions to make sure the timing marks line up.
I don't have pictures. There are six pulleys that the belt goes around. There are timing marks on the valve cover toward the timing belt on the front and on the rear. From the rear the marks are two o'clock and ten o'clock. Then two o'clock ten o'clock on the front valve cover. On the crank, it's at one o'clock. However there are marks to show all the timing marks. If changing the timing belt, start on the front and back around the rear down to the crank shaft.
