Until recent decades it had not been believed that a woman could lead a country as well as a man could. Prior to the development of feminism, the prevailing social attitude was that (to quote) a woman's place is in the home. Women were thought to be suited by their Biology only to bear and raise children.

At the present time it would be possible for a woman to be elected President, and Hillary Clinton had a very good chance at the Presidency in the 2008 election. The only reason why she did not win was that Obama proved to be more popular. However, there could easily be a woman President in the near future. The Republican Party may run Sarah Palin as their candidate in 2012, and she could win. Conceivably, the race might come down to Sarah Palin vs. Hillary Clinton, in which case there would be a woman President no matter which candidate won.

Because men tend to rule society; the government, the military, the economy, and some men fear women who are allowed to vote, run for political office, or compete with men in other fields that used to be exclusively run by men. Women are half of the population of the planet Earth and should be treated equally to men (except when it comes to the draft-only men should be drafted against their will to serve in the military). By denying women their rights to compete on an equal basis with men, men are really hurting themselves, because women have shown when they are given a chance, they can succeed and help everyone. There have been great women (in history and in the present) and if those women had not been given their chance, the human race would be much worse off than it is today. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and Mother Theresa are two famous women who made life better for all peoples, everywhere.

Almost every major country in the world has had a female president or head of state except for the USA. The reasons that the US has not are obvious to most other countries and completely unknown to the American political structure.

That's a complicated question. Women (and girls) fought for more than two centuries to get the right to vote (the word "suffrage" is an old word derived from the word "to permit" or "to allow"). The first women's rights conference occurred in Seneca Falls NY in 1848, but women didn't fully get the right to vote till 1920. There were some women who ran for president before that, like a female lawyer named Belva Lockwood in the 1880s, but obviously, these women got few votes and the men who could vote generally didn't take women candidates seriously.

After 1920, women still struggled to get taken seriously in politics. In the 1930s, there was a campaign to draft a woman for president, and the woman proposed was a well-respected judge named Florence E. Allen of Ohio; but even First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt opposed this idea, saying women hadn't been in politics long enough to become presidents. Since then, a few women have tried to get the nomination-- including the first black female candidate, Shirley Chisholm of New York, but they were not successful. Hillary Clinton has been in politics for a long time, as a First Lady, a Senator, and Secretary of State. But even she has been subjected to skepticism and sexist comments. America did not elect a black president till 2008. Perhaps in 2016, we will finally elect a female president.

But why it did not happen sooner is about the slow, often circuitous, way that society's attitudes change. Even language has changed-- years ago, "girl" was used when referring to females of any age, including adult women: a man might say about his female secretary, "I'll have my girl set up an appointment." On the other hand, "boy" was mainly for young guys, and "man" was for adults. ("Boy" was also used when white people, especially in the south, referring to black people-- white men often called black men "boy" no matter how old they were; it was a very demeaning way to address them.) Anyway, today, we'd talk about a "woman president" or a "female president," since now, the word "girl" is reserved mainly for young females, under the age of 16. I hate to seem like I am promoting my books, but if this subject interests you, check my 2014 book "Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting," the 2nd edition of which addresses society's changing attitudes and how women moved into the public sphere, both as broadcasters and as news-makers, and the obstacles they faced in doing so.
