Dred Scott thought he was free because he had lived in the free states of Illinois and Minnesota. However, he was living in the slave state of Missouri upon the death of his master, Dr. John Emerson.

I acully have a test about him tomarrow and answer:Becuase he belived that slaves and blacks should be free. He wasen't freed because his master said that "he is property he cant be a human being" so they judge agreed that he was property so he was never free. And at school we call this the Dred Scott Decision.

Because he had been taken by his master to a free-soil state, where his freedom would have been granted automatically, if he had applied for it.

But he did not apply for it until he was back in slave country, and the local judges had never had this kind of case presented to them.

That is how it ended up in the Supreme Court, and became a big national controversy.

Because he had lived on free soil for some years, where he would have been entitled to his freedom automatically. But he had not applied for it at that time.
