Why did Henry VIII make the break with rome?

Henry VIII was a king from the Tudor era. He is mainly known for having 6 wives. He also started the Church of England and broke with the Roman Catholic Church. We are going to take a closer look at why Henry broke with Rome and how significant money was when breaking with Rome.

Henry had just fought in a war against France. He had splashed the cash on all the latest weapons. This cost Henry a lot of money and Henry needed money soon. The Church was incredibly rich at that time. To Henry it made sense to take over the church and take its money. The pope was also taking all the taxes people would give in tithes and offerings. Henry 'needed' the money so he could spend it on the war.

Henry was married to Catherine of Aragon at this time but she had failed to give him a son. Henry wanted a son to take over power from him when he died. Henry thought God was punishing him for marrying his brother's widow. He also loved Anne Boleyn and was sure she would give him a son. Before he could even think about marring Anne he would have to divorce Catherine. If he did he would need permission from the Pope. The Holy Roman Empire controlled the Pope and his decisions. The leader of the Holy Roman Empire was related to Catherine of Aragon and did not want to let the family down by letting his relative get divorced. This obviously did not please Henry. If Henry wanted to divorce Catherine than he would have to do something about this situation. If he took over the church he could get a divorce whenever he wanted.

The monks and nuns where not living very holy lives. They were greedy and sinful. They were stealing money and wine. This was a big problem that needed thinking about. Henry knew that if the monasteries remained open that he would be 'the king who let down England'. This would not be good as he thought of himself as the most powerful king. He could not intervene with the monasteries as they were under the church's protection. If Henry took over the Catholic church than he could solve the problem. This is another reason why he broke with the church.

Henry longed for power. That was all he ever wanted. The church was also the most powerful thing there was at that time. It could make decisions for you and you could not change that decision. Henry longed for that amount of power. If he took over the church he could have that amount of power and use that power whenever he wanted to.

The main reason that Henry VIII broke from the Church of Rome was that he believed that he needed a son to make sure that the Tudor dynasty survived. In those days there could not be a queen so Mary could not rule. However, there were also other reasons which included that Henry needed money to become more powerful in Europe. The Church had lots of money. Henry wanted to control the Church to make himself more powerful and rich.Henry was jelous that the church had all that wealth so he was plotting on making a break so he got what he thought he deserved and needed at the time. As Henry's reign progressed it became more likely that he would break with Rome. This was partly because Catherine bore Henry six children - five died (two of which were boys) and one survived, Mary. Since Catherine had failed to produce a male heir Henry was getting worried. But added to this Henry thought that God had punished him for marrying his brother's wife and he thought that was the reason he got still born children. He then met Anne Boleyn who came up to him and told him she was pregnant with his child. Henry wanted to marry her before the child was born because he thought she will give birth to a boy.

He needed a son: for power and he was lonely

He needed money to get a church: faith and money so then he will also be powerful so people would do what he said.

The Pope would not dissolve Henry's marriage to his first wife. In resolving the problem Henry argued that because Kings were considered 'divine' he was only answerable to God. Therefore, he dispensed with the Pope, made himself the head of the Church in England and created the divorce.

Henry split from Rome partly because he really wanted to have a son as if he didn't there would only be a girl as the heir of the throne and Henry was very manly on only believed on men running the country. Henry's wife at that time was Katherine of Aragon and she only had one daughter. Henry was getting impatient with this. He saw who he thought was the most beautiful girl ever Anne Beryline. He wanted to get a divorce from Katherine but that was against the Christian church rules. So he did it any and married Anne. And that is why he may have split from Rome.

Henry didn't break with Rome, why should he, what he wanted from Rome, an annulment could be got from other sources! Mind you he probably felt that he had been made a fool of, he'd paid a lot of money out in bribes to the Roman Officials and they hadn't produced. But there was some other thing, another way to get back at the pope, as it were.

For several hundred years there had been animated discussions within the Catholic Church to ascertain just where the magisterium, or authority, lay within the Catholic Church! Initially it was seen to be with Revelation, Scripture and the Bishops through the Councils.

When the pope proved such a weak support in Henry's love life, Henry in his embarrassment hit back by pointing out that the Pope was breaking the Church Canons. The Council of Nice said quite clearly that one bishop could not interfere in another bishop's see. It was a major error on the Bishop's part in expelling Henry from Rome's Communion, all Henry had done was point the finger at the pope and , possibly it would all have died the death tomorrow. In fact by taking such a line the Pontiff was exacerbating problem and causing the irritation to fester.

It is a canard that Henry broke from Rome!

Henry along with the Church in England simply pointed out the Canons of the Catholic Church say that one bishop cannot interfere in another bishop's see! As the Bishop of Rome was behaving in this matter in a regular way, he took umbrage and refused his communion to Henry! What Henry had done was to point out that the pope was usurping the authority of the Church and Councils, the pope was turning the western Church in to a sect!

Henry VIII made the break from Rome and the Roman Catholic Church when he was married to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

Henry and Catherine had not managed to produce a son to succeed to the throne and Henry believed that God was punishing him. Henry wanted to divorce Catherine on the basis that their marriage was illegal as she had previously married Arthur, Henry's older brother who had died 6 months after the wedding. He also wanted to marry Anne Boleyn but could not marry her unless he first had a divorce from his wife.

Henry asked the Pope for a divorce but the Pope would not allow him to divorce Catherine.

With the refusal Henry was threatened with excommunication from the Catholic Church should he divorce Catherine. He did divorce his wife, was excommunicated and created his own church, the Anglican Church of England, becoming Head of the Church of England and also Defender of the new faith.

The break from Rome also meant that the taxes that had previously been paid to the Church in Rome would go to Henry instead and, after the break, he sacked the Catholic monasteries of their gold and confiscated the Church's land making him even richer.

The break with Rome was simply a quarrel between two powerful men, the King of England and the Bishop of Rome. It was not about a divorce, a fanciful idea, but about an annulment.

Henry, a Catholic King, wanted an annulment from his wife and the custom of those days was to approach the Bishop of Rome and his Court and obtain one from that source at a very great cost.

This Henry did, paying out his money to the Roman Court and obviously expected his due return. Unfortunately for Henry, the Pope was taken prisoner by his queen's nephew, the German Emperor and under these circumstances the deal fell through, to Henry's displeasure and extreme frustration when his money was not returned.

In disgust at not receiving his due and in deep humiliation at being the laughing stock of medieval Europe, Henry lashed out with the word that the Bishop of Rome was actually breaking the ancient laws of the Catholic Church and breaking the very basic rules of the Church Councils, and that the Bishop of Rome has no authority to interfere in another bishops see.

The bishop then, in high dudgeon, banned Henry from his communion. This didn't bother Henry in the least because he was not a Roman Catholic but a member of the Catholic Church in England.

What Henry and the Church in England did do was to point out that according to the Ecumenical Councils of the Undivided Church, that the Pope had no authority within another bishop's see. This, whilst it was true, upset the Pope and he in turn withdrew his communion from Henry.
