There were several factors to this answer, some with more impact than others but here goes:

Stalingrad was named after Josef Stalin, current political leader of the USSR, and thus was seen as an icon of hope, therefore many were willing to fight long and hard for it.

Supply lines were stretched thin this far away from Germany, and with the poor conditions of roads, this made it even worst and soldiers were fighting under-supplied

Once again Russia shines in several key factors, primarily they outnumbered Germany many times over and while many of these people were peasants with no combat experience, or even weapons whatsoever soviet Propaganda drove them on

Russia shines yet a 3rd time as Soviet snipers time after time again devastate German chain of command and morale by taking out officers and other soldiers from afar, some of Russia's finest were recorded with having over 500 confirmed kills

Timing mostly. Experts say if he had started just 3 weeks earlier he would have succeeded. The Blitzkrieg tactics were no good without his armour and rains made the roads so muddy they stopped just about all vehicles in their tracks. His troops were poorly supplied and did not have winter gear since it was supposed to be over before then, but wasn't. The initial thrust was too far East since Hitler initially was after land and ignored the importance of capturing Moscow against his general's advice. He moved his troops over later after he realized his mistake. He also way underestimated Russian soldiers. they were among the most brutal guerrilla fighters his army had to contend with. He also had a 2 front war-he should have waited until after Britain was out of the way and not let ally Japan bring in America until he was ready and then he could have assisted them

Hitler majorly failed to take over Russia, due to the harsh winter climate. "General Winter" was too much for the German troops, who were not prepared for Russia's extreme weather. On top of that, Hitler began making foolish and desperate decisions which weakened his strategic strength, an example of this is his attack on Stalingrad. He attacked the city to wound Stalin's pride and it had no strategic value for the Germans.

back in 43 the us and british army invaded Sicily so Hitler pulled his soldiers out of Stalingrad and he sent his down to Sicily to help the Italians

There were a number of factors that influenced the fall of Stalingrad . The most egregious were an extenuated logistical supply train and the harshest Winter in 50 years which exacerbated the first problem of supply .

German troops got to Volga in the autumn 1942 and realised that they have three opportunities:

1)try to cross Volga (one of largest european rivers) under Russian fire and appear themselves in the empty and windy desert without a chance to obtain food and fuel, having Volga behind them.

2) go back without a slightest idea for how long they should "go back"

3) try to stay for a winter in the city their bombers devastated two months before.

The understanding that there is no reason to cross the river comes to everyone who watches the map. Germans could proceed with their combat tanks more and more eastward till the gasoline finish. OK. What else?

Turning back immediately turn them a loosers. (it just happend later)

So they stayed. Counting back started. Every minute in Stalingrad Nazy Army melted because of Russian resistance and poor weather conditions. Frost was heavy, but Military Academies should tought Nazy officers some geography beforehands, I wonder.

German Army in Stalingrad was finished after Russians encircled them aiming first strikes against their sattelites troops from Italy and Romania. Those really didn't understand there they were led to....
