The Africans were used to working, especially in hot conditions.
The Spaniards started bringing enslaved Africans to New Spain in 1501 because they heard from other countries that the Africans were stronger than the Native Americans and did not die from Spanish diseases. The Spaniards also thought that the Africans would be used to the hard work and bad conditions. Lastly, they new that they could sell them at a higher price than they paid.
It was the Portuguese who first brought African slaves to America in the Carribean in order to do agricultural work in 1502. Spain had many colonies in the Carribean, South and Central America. In order to successfully expoit the agricultural potential of many of these colonies they imported stolen and kidnapped human beings from Africa that were bought at a certain price to do the hard backbreaking labor that they themselves were not willing nor disposed to do. This was done in order to make them extemely wealthy at the expense of the defensless and vulnerable victims. The French, British, and Americans also did the same things although it most certainly wasn't favorably looked upon by every citizen of these countries as history shows.
