It was basically an economic motive. By sailing west, Columbus believed he could reach the wealth of the Indies, the name that Europeans gave to the areas of Japan, China, Indonesia (Spice Islands) and India, and save much time and danger compared to the overland routes. The nation that could easily reach those areas would reap commercial benefits and increase the wealth (economy) of the nation. When it was discovered that the "New World" stood in the way of reaching the Indies, the major European powers explored the area to find a water route through the "New World." Once they realized that North and South America could provide them with riches and trade, they began to establish permanent colonies.
