Because he didn't believe in slavery, and wanted to end it. At the time many people didn't support this idea. People very much liked the idea of slavery. So, for that, he was made fun of. Also, people might have made fun of him because of his big top hat in which he kept all his important letters and mail. Lincoln's physical appearance -- tall, thin, uneven beard, one droopy eyelid -- also were favored objects for political Cartoons. In addition, Lincoln was from the rural west and carried his western speech and most noticeably the hard 'r' characteristic of the Ohio valley, and this sounded coarse and uneducated to the elite easterners.
