To punish the people of Boston for the Boston Tea Party.

------

The Intolerable acts were a series of laws to punish the Bostonians for the Tea Party; there were four of them.

1. Boston Port was closed off from importing/exporting goods by ship, and any other ship that would wish to dock or leave port from there.

2. The King back in England decided that he would choose the governors for the colonies.

3. The customs office for immigrants was moved to Boston.

4. Boston became the British army's headquarters (so they could keep a better eye on the citizens of Boston).

The British wanted the American colonists to pay for the French and Indian War. They felt that they were protecting American citizens. However they also expected Americans to buy only British goods even though Dutch goods were cheaper. They expected Americans to stay east of the mountains to allow land west of the mountains to be undisturbed for the Native Americans.

The British were furious about the Boston Tea Party. They wanted Boston to pay property damages. The Boston Port Act closed Boston Harbor and did not allow American ships to leave the harbor. They passed the Quartering Act allowing British or Hessian soldiers to be housed and fed by the people of Boston. They passed the Quebec Act which allowed tolerance of Catholics which really annoyed the Protestants of Boston. The Administration of Justice Act was "an act for the impartial administration of justice in the case of persons questioned for any acts done by them in the execution of the law, or for the suppression of riots and tumults, in the province of the Massachusetts Bay, in New England." The Massachusetts Government Act took governing out of the hands of local people and put British officials in charge.

The Intolerable Acts actually had 4 things followed after it, they powered up the Quartering Acts and the Townshend Act, made the Intolerable Acts and strengthened the government.
