The Mormons moved from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois to Utah because they faced violent persecution and in some cases were kicked out of their homes or were asked to leave by the government. At the time that the Mormons arrived, Utah was only inhabited by a handful of (mostly friendly) Native American tribes and was outside the jurisdiction of the US Government, which meant that the Mormons could finally practice their religion in peace.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church), along with the bulk of it's members, moved from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois to Utah between 1830 and 1847. In each place they settled, they faced severe persecution and in some cases were asked to leave by the government. They settled in Utah because they had finally found a place where they could have religious freedom.

The Mormons had intended on settling an area much larger than modern-day Utah and naming it Deseret. However, the federal government didn't want the Mormons having such a large territory, so they cut it down and renamed it Utah.
The Mormons were searching for a place where they could practice their religion in peace and found that place in Utah.
Utah has a remarkable history. Probably the most important event in the history of Utah is the settling of the area by Mormons who moved to escape religious persecution.
Some say that the Mormons had to denounce polygamy before Utah became a state. This may or may not be true, as the plans to make Utah a state were in action before the Church officially denounced polygamy. Either way, Mormons arrived there in 1847, Utah became a territory in 1850, Mormons ended polygamy in 1890, and Utah became a state in 1896.
Brigham Young only lead the Mormons to one place, Utah.
The Mormons eventually settled in Salt Lake City, Utah and the surrounding areas.
Utah.
Utah was settled by Mormons.
The first people to settle in Utah were not immigrants, but indians and mormons.
Brigham Young became president of the Mormon church when Joseph Smith died. The Mormons needed a safe place to practice their religion. The Mormons had been kicked out of every other place they had tried to settle. At the time, Utah was a part of Mexico, and they wanted to escape the United States government. Also, before Joseph Smith died he told Brigham that the Saints would eventually have to move west to the Rocky Mountains. Because every where else that Mormons tried to settle were chased out and abused. So the Mormons went west to seek a place where they could practice their religion without being provoked.
