When Spaniards conquered the Aztec Empire, they deemed useless all pre-existing infrastructure the Aztecs had built beforehand. For example, things such as hygienic facilities were very different from those Europeans were accustomed to.

Therefore, they razed Tenochtitlan and "recycled" some of the building materials such as marble to build their own buildings.

There was an Aztec prophecy that the place they would build their great city would be where they saw an eagle eating a snake while perched on a cactus. They saw this and build Tenochtitlan at the site.

The image of the eagle, snake, and cactus is used on the coat of arms of Mexico and on the Mexican flag because of this story.
