After the French War in Vietnam, the United States stepped in to insure that the country did not become a Communist country. It was instrumental in creating what would become the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). Diem was even choosen by the United States to become its interim president because as a Catholic, he was strongly anti-communist. Diem was living in the U.S. at the time. The U.S. promised backing for the new country and its government. This involved investing money and time to build up a practically non-existing military. When the U.S. escalated its presence in Vietnam with the introduction of troops, it was protecting its investment in the country. In short, South Vietnam was a creation of the U.S. and it didn't want to see it fail.

It was a barrier to the march of Russian and Chinese Communism through South East Asia. Although South Vietnam was eventually lost, in the period, Thailand which was slipping away trained its army in combat in Vietnam, then turned it on the revolutionaries supported by China which were taking it over. Similarly with the Philippines. Also Indonesia was able to purge growing takeover there. And Taiwan and South Korea also trained and re-equipped their armies in combat, the better to resist China and North Korea. A short term failure, the war stabilised and protected the region in the long term.
