Because of four underlying causes,

1. Nationalism (The belief that your country is better than the other countries). This made nations assertive and aggressive.

2. Imperalism (The desire to conquer colonies) This brought the powers into conflict- Germany wanted an empire, where as France and Great Britain already HAD empires.

3. Militarism (Arms race- the attempt to buid up a strong army and navy gave nations the will to make war)

4. Alliances (A union or connection of interests: an association formed between countries or groups for mutual benefit) There were two alliances- The Triple Alliance was formed in 1882, and consisted of Germany (Who expected the french to try to get Alsace and lorraine back- they expected a war on two fronts against France and Russi. Also, the German army;s "Schlieffen Plan" planned to defeat France before the Russian army was ready to fight. The German army would attack through Beligium, (Who Britain had promised to defend in the 1839 treaty) and defeat France quickly. it would then deal with Russia.), Austria-Hungary (this country had been growing weaker for many years and wanted to expand its empire to the South into the Balkans. The only country that stood in it's way was Serbia, which has become powerful in the years 1900 to 1914. The Austrians wanted to attack Serbia but the Russians backed up Serbia. The Austrians knew they could not defeat Russia unless they got help from Germany, which is why they joined Germany to form the Triple Alliance) And Italy was also part of the Triple Alliance (Italy became a united country only in 1861 and they wanted an empire. They had conquered land in East Africa by 1890, and in 1911, conquered Libya from Turkey. They joined the Triple Alliance, depsite the fact they wanted Austrian land, and supported France against Germany in the Moroccan crises of 1906 and 1911).

The other alliance was called the Triple Entante, which was formed in 1907 when France, Britain and Russia were alarmed by the Triple Alliance.

Hope this information helped!! :)
