In 1943 Mussolini was still in control of the Repubblica di Salo' but the war was still going on and it was going to be lost. The few that strongly believed in the fascist ideology were eventually overwhelmed by the feeling of the people, sick and tired of a long war. So in the end the only reason why the people turn on Mussolini is the same reason why mice leave the ship before it sinking. Its easier to turn large amount of people on the concepts of fear of death. If you weren't fascist you would be killed, once Mussolini and Hitler lost, if you were a fascist you would have been killed. But again, Mussolini predicted it in his will talks about how the people are going to turn on him and how politics its hard because one is trying to grasp people emotion which are changeable, and so "Mutevolissimo è lo spirito degli italiani" ( changeable are the emotions of the Italian people). So honestly the only reason why the people turn on him, is because it was the best course of action for their survival at the time. Today in modern Italy one of the most sold application for iPhone is iMussolini ( all the speeches he gave). Well hope this helps.

Cheers

Mussolini was a bad fascist ruler and dictator of the Italians. He ruled them with tyranny and oppression. He represented himself differently when they elected him. I think he was their ruler for nearly twenty years. They suffered under his tyranny (and some murders). He idolized Hitler and Hitler liked him too. They became fair friends with one another. The Italian people were furious when Mussolini joined the Nazis in the war against Europe and Africa. They really hated the German Nazis occupying their nation. They built up an obvious resistance against Mussolini and the Nazis. When they could get their hands on Mussolini they executed him and other bad people. They were thrilled when the Allied Forces defeated the Nazis.

Mussolini was overthrown because, in addition to the population's general lack of interest in the war, the Allies had just landed in Sicily and the invasion of Italy was looming.

Because Mussolini was an evil dictator and when Italy was invaded by Germany in 1943 and 1944 after Italy surrendered to the Americans, the people of Italy hated him.
