∙ 10y agoIt was because they relied on agriculture and didn't have modern farm equipment like tractors. Cash crops like tobacco and cotton contributed to having slaves since much more money could be made off of such items to justify the expense (from a purely economic standpoint) of having slaves. So slavery helped keep the economy going, much like illegal Immigration and prison systems do today.
Of course, to justify the slavery, racism was promoted, and that in turn increased slavery. If they could think of slaves as human-like animals that were not really humans, then they could get around the moral implications and excuse their reprehensible behavior.
