∙ 11y agoIf you are referring to the Mormons in general, it was because they were ordered killed by the governor of Missouri and attacked by a mob in Illinois that destroyed their city. After the martyrdom and murder of the prophet Joseph Smith by a mob, they needed a place they could move to without fear of some group doing the same because of their religious beliefs.
If you are referring to a specific group of missionaries sent to any western regions by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is because they were sent to that region by the church leaders in the belief that God has called them to serve in that area.
