The mortal gorgon was given snake hair to make sure people looked at her face, her eyes, turning them into stone. Ok, so say your walking along the greek trail going to Athens to meet someone (1500 years ago), and you run into a lady with her hair hissing at you. You'd look, right? So you'd look at the hair, and the eyes are only an inch under the hair, and boom your stone. she could have also had snakes for hair because.... well the reason you turn to stone is because they are so hideous right? well the snakes could add to the hideousness!

Medusa is the most well-known creature that had snakes in place of her hair, although she would not be classified in all versions of the stories as a god. Some versions of her story have her being killed by Perseus, and the mother of Pegasus and Chrysaor.Medusa was a mortal, not a god.
