Pads are worn out. The squeak is a warning device to alert you that you need brake service. Don't keep driving, as you will ruin the rotors. I HAVE A 2001 NEON AND I JUST CHANGED THE BRAKES & ROTERS BECAUSE THEY WERE SQUEEKING BADLY. WELL AFTER ONE WEEK IT SOUNDS THE SAME AS BEFOR. THANK YOU Dodge !!!!!!!!!! Note to the neaon owner: That is a poor design and typical of squeaking. Reasons for brake squeak other than poor design may include: brake dust built up in rear drums, brake warning sensors as mentioned (fyi-rarely are rotors worth saving), hard spot(s) in pads, glazing built up on braking surfaces, anti rattle clips missing or broken, poor installation- that is not using a quality lubricant on moving parts, not cleaning or lubing slide surfaces, not using shims if needed, improper installation. Not burnishing in pads properly after installing. If it happens only early morning or during first drive after setting, it may be moisture absorbed by linings until they get warmed up.
