Why does Iran want Nuclear Weapons?

If you ask me the idea of nuclear weapons in Israeli hands just seems like a bad idea, their entire history has been marked with with evidence of their bad temper and arrogant militaristic tendencies.

NOBODY needs nukes; everybody WANTS them because everybody else HAS them. No country is an exception to this. I am a pacifist at heart, but this question is like asking why the US needs nuclear weapons. They exist as a deterrent to attack by other nuclear countries, and they give no leverage in wars with non-nuclear countries like North Vietnam, or Afghanistan in the case of the USSR. Also, Israel uses the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights, the West Bank of the Jordan River, and (formerly) the Sinai Peninsula as strategic buffer zones through which an enemy must penetrate before attacking Israel. Does not the United States use the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, Mexico, and Canada in the same basic way, but on a larger scale? Like Israel, India is also armed with nukes, and they face two nuclear-armed countries (China & Pakistan), yet relations are civil. An armed society is a polite society, yes? * Yes, their history is indeed filled with violence, as is Western history. * Not everyone wants nukes. Many countries have the capability to build a nuclear arsenal, but they have declined it.

Israel has regional adversaries that have made it clear that they will destroy Israel as soon as they have the capability to do so. As a result, Israel needs to maintain a more powerful military to ward off such attacks.
