I had the same problem with my 1996 Cadillac SLS. Had it diagnosed at a dealer, said head bolts are "lifting", a common problem with Northstar engines. Dealer could not guarantee a fix. I found a 100% success rate fix on the internet. Try looking for "Northstar Engine Head Bolt Repair Kit" on the web. Here is a retired tool and die maker who had the same problem, and made longer head bolts than the factory bolts. Pretty inexpensive, but the labor to pull your motor, heads, machine shop, etc, could be several thousands.

Why does my 1994 mark overheat briefly spill coolant from the reservoir and then run at normal temp?

it could be a plugged radiator ,faulty thermostate, water pump. or over fill of water that's why of spill. The worst case !!! cracked head gasket.!!!

What happens if you spill coolant on the drive belt?

The belt will squeak until the coolant wears off.

What would cause high coolant level in the recovery reservoir?

The radiator cap controls the amount of fluid to your reserve. So if it were stuck open as the engine heats it would spill into the reserve. Also any problem that would make your engine overheat could keep the cap opened longer then desired. Overheating engines with other than cooling problems could stem from blown head gaskets or piston rings.

Why is there coolant coming from the reservoir and spraying on the motor in a northstar 4.0 engine 1996 Oldsmobile aurora?

There is air in the system or there is an overheat problem. The main reasons for this type of coolant loss are: An air lock. The pressure cap has failed. The head gasket is blown. The thermostat has failed in the closed position. Inspect the rubber seals in the cap and discard and replace the cap as necessary. Turn on the ignition and put the heater controls to HOT. Refill the system. Run the engine, check for loss. If not OK, switch off and let the engine cool. With a cool engine fill the reservoir right up and leave the cap off. Switch on engine and look for bubbles in reservoir. Bubbles should clear in a few seconds. If revving the engine produces more bubbles, headgasket has failed. Do not leave the engine running longer than necessary. Beware, the water will get hot, expand and spill out. If previous tests fail to show the fault, remove the thermostat and place in pan of water. Heat the water, the thermostat should open wide before the water boils.

What causes coolant to backup and spill over in the reservoir until its all gone?

the reason why the coolant is spilling up over the reservoir is because the thermostat needs to be replaced because when the engine needs water the thermostat heats up from the engine and causes the springs to expant which opens a seal to allow the water throughout the engine i just realpaced the thermostat in my volkswagen

Is an antifreeze leak dangerous?

No. It can result in damage to the engine if you loose all of your coolant. I have damaged an Alternator by coolant spraying on it. There is some risk if you try to work on the radiator or remove the cap when the engine is HOT. The fluid can spray on you can cause burns. Antifreeze is not harmful to you if you spill it on you. ( cats and dogs are attracted to antifreeze and could possibly kill them if they drink it )

Will coolant spill out of the over flow tank if the car is to hot?

put coolant into my over flow car was running hot and the coolant erupted like a volcano on the side of the over flow

What causes coolant to backup and spill over in the reservoir?

I had this problem ....Head Gasket or radiator cap

Why does Ford Duratech 2.5 runs rough and check engine light on. I cleaned idle air control valve. Mooseing has stopped but engine still misses and check coolant light is on. The coolant level is fine?

I can't help you with the rough engine. Maybe someone else can. The coolant light is one of many tiny little engineering things with the Cougar1 ('99-'00), though this problem might also affect the Cougar2 ('01-'02) but I don't know if that was changed, which don't work right on all units. The problem is a faulty sensor that throws out a low level warning before the coolant drops below the MAX line, let alone the MIN line. You can safely top the reservoir off to about an inch over the MAX line without risking a spill as the reservoir fills due to coolant expansion.

Why does my car's coolant spill when the engine is heated?

Coolant and water expand as they heat. That is why there is usually an expansion tank on newer cars and trucks. That's where you top off your coolant leval (add coolant). If you are getting coolant out the overflow tube it's either too full or your thermostat may not be working properly. I have a ford van with an E-250 5.8 liter engine and if I add any coolant to the expansion tank it flows out the over flow tube on the radiator if there is no air space in the top of the radiator once the engine has reached operating temp. My solution which was given to me by a ford mechanic was to put no fluid in the expansion tank and to make sure there was 3/4 to 1 inch empty in the top of the radiator, also only top up the radiator from the radiator cap. to within 1 inch of the top. It has worked fine ever since, any time I add too much it automatically discharges it out the overflow tube.

How do you add water to radiator 2002 Daewoo Leganza?

There is really no way to directly add coolant to the radiarot is this or many other vehicles. There is a "Recovery Tank" in the engine compartment that has two lines on it, One line says "Full Hot" and the other says " Full Cold". If the engine has not been running, you add enough coolant to meet the "Full Cold" line on the tank. and if the vehicle has been running and is hot, Fill to the "Full Hot" line. NEV ER OPEN the Radiator cap(if equipped) if the engine is hot. The fluid can spill out under pressure and you can be seriously burned.

Is it necessary to drain coolant before changing hoses on 2004 buick century?

That is always a messy job at best. If you don't drain it you are going to spill radiator fluid all over your engine when you take a hose off. It is best to drain it into a pan and then add new fluid when you are all done. You may want to flush the engine and radiator out with a cleaning agent while you are at it.
