Check your transmission fluid level. Pull into a gas station or someplace very flat and put the car in park, and with the engine running pull the transmission dipstick, wipe it clean, insert it into the tube and pull again. The level should be on the dipstick in the band between L and H. You are probably low on fluid, you fill the transmission through the dipstick tube so make sure you get a funnel that will go into the tube from your parts store and DO NOT OVERFILL THE TRANSMISSION as this will cause seal damage and leakage.

Maybe, but the transmission may not be able to shift gears.

Your car might kick when you shift from park to drive if your transmission fluid is low or very dirty. You might also have worn gears in the transmission.

User Avatar

The most common cause for a transmission not to shift into certain gears is low transmission fluid. Another cause is a broken shifting fork in the transmission.

A more accurate description of the problem along with if its an automatic or manual transmission is needed.

if it was automatic it had a torqueflite tranny and had 3 forward gears and a reverse and if stick shift you had either a 3 speed tranny (rare) or a 4 speed.

Generally shifting from reverse to drive, while still rolling, is possible but not recommended. This places a lot of stress on the transmission and other components of the drive train.

the reverse safety back up switch is located on top of the transmission next to the clutch resivior

Your truck may not shift gears because the transmission sensor is damaged or broken. It also may not shift gears because the transmission or linkage is damaged.

Automatic cars offer drivers much greater convenience as they no longer have to manually clutch in to shift gears. Most automatic cars available come with 4 gears, plus an additional reverse gear.

User Avatar

The clutch (transmission release) is likely malfunctioning, then simple momentum will allow the transmission to jump gears. For standard transmission, check the clutch plate. For automatic transmissions, there is a misalignment caused by wear or failure.

User Avatar

if its a manual transmission its your pressure plate if its an automatic it could be the disc attached to your flywheel
