You didn't say if the fuel pump runs. If you turn the key to the 'on', not 'start', position after being 'off' for a minute, you should hear the fuel pump (in the tank) hum/prime for a few seconds and then shut off. This lets you know that your fuel pump is working and the fuel pump relay is at least partially working.

If you don't hear the fuel pump run - check the fuel pump fuse, the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump.

If you can hear the fuel pump run -

If you hit 'start', and the engine runs for a few seconds, then dies, check the fuel pump relay (usually under a plastic cover under the hood at the firewall), the oil pressure switch (mounted on an extended pipe fitting extending up from the back of the block just under the distibutor), and the fuel filter.

If the engine does not fire at all, check the injector fuses.

If engine turns over but dist. doesn't turn you either have a broken dist. drive hex shaft , broken dist. shaft or holding pin for dist. drive gear on bottom of dist. has sheared off.Pull off dist. cap and try to turn rotor on end of shaft. It should not turn freely. If it does then pull dist. out of motor by removing hold down clamp. Mark rotor position with felt pen mark on dist. housing before removing dist. for proper replacement position.

Where is cam sensor on 1996 Chevy truck?

It's in the dist. The dist. itself is the cam sensor.

Distributer turns by hand why?

If the whole dist. turns then the dist. hold down clamp is loose. If the rotor button turns all the way around then the roll pin in the bottom of the dist. drive gear is broken. Remove the dist. and inspect the cam gear and dist. gear closely. A BAD OR LOCKED UP OIL PUMP IS THE REASON FOR THIS.
