If the exhaust gasses from your car is black, the mixture between air ang fuel is probably too rich. That means your car is blowing in too much gasoline / diesel compared to the ammount of air. This is not necessarily the problem, but a very likely cause. Other colours of your exhaust will also tell you that something is wrong. White smoke means water in the combustion (either from water in the fuel, or water leaking into the cylinder from the cooling system), and blue smoke means oil in the combustion. A reason for getting a too rich mixture of fuel and air is the carburettor not functioning properly.
