You have either put too much oil into the engine or you may have a leak in your cylinder head gasket which is allowing coolant water into the oil - (if this is happening then you will see the water levels going down and perhaps a salad cream colored deposit collecting where you fill the engine with oil.

Three conditions why the oil stick would read too full: (1) too much oil was added; (2) gasoline is getting into the oil; (3) water is getting into the oil. When you check the oil level, smell the oil for a gasoline smell or look for water beads on the dipstick and check the color of the oil. If it is chocolate-colored, there is water in the oil. In either case of gasoline or water in the oil, some repairs will have to be made. If it is just a case of too much oil, you need to drain some out.

How do you read the oil dip stick?

Oil level should be taken when the engine has stood still for some time, better over night, to allow oil in the upper level to sink back into the oil sump. Wipe the dip stick and push it into the pipe from which it had been removed initially. Pull the dip stick out and inspect the oil level. There should be a minimum and a maximum level marked on the dip stick. If the oil level is near the minimum mark, add more oil, but don't pour too much oil in.

Too much oil can do serious damage to your engine. The excess oil will come in contact with the crankshaft creating a froth of oil mixed with air. This is a poor lubricant and will cause serious engine wear. Drain out the excess oil.

What should you do if you put too much oil in the engine and smoke is coming from the exhaust?

Too Much Oil in EngineHere are suggestions from FAQ Farmers: Let some of the oil out from the pan and remeasure it and add enough oil to get it to the FULL position on the oil dip stick. Clean the dip stick with a clean rag before you insert it and measure it twice making sure that it is inserted corrctly.Drain your oil. if you are using a lot of oil( a quart a week ). put in some 10-40 oil. if you don't use oil. put in 4 qaurts 10-30. let it sit and then check your dip stick(make sure it goes all the way in!) if you need more oil add a quart. run for a while -- let the engine sit for ten minutes -- check oil again . good luck .
