Salt contains sodium and chlorine ions. The sodium in salt is a good conductor of electricity so salt water is more likely to shock you than fresh or distilled water.

It is true that salt water is a better electrolyte than fresh water and has been proven to be contributory to electrolytic corrosion of metallic surfaces in pools. It is also quite possible that the pool shell and equipment does not have a proper ground bond, especially if it is an older pool. You may need to chip some of the gunite and attach a #8 ground wire with and approved clamp to the steel rebar and drive a metal spike into the ground and attach all equipment, lights, handrails and ladders to it. This should eliminate any shocking you experience provided there is not a dead short in the pool light cord. I would eliminate the pool light as the source first.

What should be done if your Pool Service treats your salt water pool as a Chlorinated pool and adds chlorine shock to your salt water pool by mistake?

Get over it. He made a mistake. You may point it out to him nicely of course. BTW it does not hurt or he may have felt that the pool needed it. BTW there is a mode in the salt system to shock the pool thru the system. precipitation

Do you still have to add shock each week with the salt systems?

Salt pools still require weekly shock maintenance, but not near the amount that a chlorine pool would need. There are Salt Pool Shock Treatments out there for your particular pool setup.

Would you shock a salt water pool or use algaeize or more salt?

Salt generators make the same chemical, sodium hypochlorite, that you buy at the store. The major difference is that it costs a lot more to make than to buy it. See other posts I have made in this arena for more info.A salt water pool IS a chlorine pool. Period! IF it needs shocking you shock it the same way as any chlorine pool, by adding more chlorine either by manually adding it or setting the SWCG to the boost or shock setting.

How do you put salt shock in your swimming pool?

If you own a salt pool and you need to raise the salt level, go buy NON-IODIZED salt and add the appropriate amount (as determined by your particular salt-chlorinator's owners' manual) to get the level to where it needs to be. The salt addition process is nothing fancy; cut the corner of the bag with a box cutter and pour in the pool then sweep any that is resting on the bottom to get it to dissolve. Note: Adding salt is not shocking your pool, rather it is loading the gun that can be used to superchlorinate or "Shock" your water.

Can you use salt and chlorine in your pool?

Yes as a mater of fact that is what salt water pool normally is. With a salt water pool there is a electronic salt water chlorinator installed that uses the salt in the water to create chlorine. However if you don't have a salt water chlorinator and prefer the feeling of a salt water pool then there is no reason not to add salt to the pool as well as keeping up the chlorine yourself.

Can you make your own saltwater by just adding salt into your pool and if so how much salt and what type of salt should you use?

No you will not have a salt water pool. yes you will have salt water but the actual electronic plates found in a genrator converts the salt in the water to chlorine to sanitize the pool water. A: You have to have the mechanical device to produce the chlorine in a salt pool. THE SALT A MEANS TO PRODUCE CHLORINE FOR YOUR POOL!
