This can happen in the older GM trucks and cars (the ones with 2 different keys, square for ignition and round for the door). There are a couple of different ways this can happen. Either the gear at the back of the lock has broken (or come loose) or there is a part further down in the steering column that also can break that would cause this symptom. Some call it the "rack" because the dealers replacement part is called a "rack kit".

Probably a bad ignition switch.

Do not start, but turn the key on and push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and let off of it 3 times, then turn key off. Then start the truck. If it don't go off then repeat steps again.

Turn the key on to the "run" postion, (key on, engine off) and step on the gas pedal 3 times within 10 seconds and then turn the key off. Then, turn the key on and start the truck. After it starts, the change oil light will flash and then reset.

Read closely, This will take 33 mins. to do. Get in your truck with a watch, Turn key to start mode and as soon as you here the starter, turn key loose not off. Then wait 11 min. no more and no less 11 min. only After 11 min. turn key off, then repete the same steps 2 more times. Then after the last step is done, turn key off, Then start truck, Your done. If truck don't start. Then repete all the steps again, to make sure it was only 11 min. each time. BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING CHECK THE SECURITY FUSE IN FUSE BOX.
This sounds like a battery that isn't putting out it's full load of cranking amps anymore. However, when you turn the key to "start" a relay should automatically turn off all of your electrical devices. So I would start there with the starter relay.
My truck did that once or twice. Both times it was because the fuse had blown that powers the brake lights. I did also find out that if you shut the truck off and turn the key on that you can get it into netrual, then you can start the truck and move it.
If you mean the change engine oil light, and if your truck is like mine, then you turn the ignition key to the on position,(don't start truck), and step on the accelerator three times, then turn the key off. The light sould be gone after that.
Key off Press and hold clock button on dash turn key to on positions (do not start car) and wait 10 seconds turn off key and release button Start car ... indicator should be reset.
Turn the key on but do not start the truck then slowly press the gas pedal to the floor 3 times within 10-30 seconds. Turn the key off then back on...the change oil message should be cleared. (I just did this myself on my truck)

Turn key on, DO NOT START. Then push the gas pedal all the way down to the floor 3-times. Then turn key off, and then start the engine.
Do this about 4 times, Turn key on ( do not try to start ) wait about 4 seconds then turn key off and wait about 1 minute, then turn key on again for 4 seconds. Repeat these steps about 4 or 5 times and then turn key off and then start the engine.
I've had to resolve this issue by turning the steering wheel and playing with the key. You can try to start the truck and then quickly turn it off to get the key to come out as well. My problem ended up being a shift solenoid that was sticking and telling the truck that it was still in gear.
Time when trying to start the car engine trns butwill not start turn key off then onagain it starts right up
Do you get a NO BUS That lights up on your mileage light?
Are you sure it ran out of gas?? If it did infact run out of fuel then after you put fuel back in it then just turn the key on and do not try to start it and wait about 5 seconds. Then turn key off and repeat steps again about 5 times and then turn key off and then start the engine. It should start.
Turn key on , do not start. Push gas pedal to the floor 3 times turn key off, then start engine.
