This can happen in the older GM trucks and cars (the ones with 2 different keys, square for ignition and round for the door). There are a couple of different ways this can happen. Either the gear at the back of the lock has broken (or come loose) or there is a part further down in the steering column that also can break that would cause this symptom. Some call it the "rack" because the dealers replacement part is called a "rack kit".

Read closely, This will take 33 mins. to do. Get in your truck with a watch, Turn key to start mode and as soon as you here the starter, turn key loose not off. Then wait 11 min. no more and no less 11 min. only After 11 min. turn key off, then repete the same steps 2 more times. Then after the last step is done, turn key off, Then start truck, Your done. If truck don't start. Then repete all the steps again, to make sure it was only 11 min. each time. BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING CHECK THE SECURITY FUSE IN FUSE BOX.
This sounds like a battery that isn't putting out it's full load of cranking amps anymore. However, when you turn the key to "start" a relay should automatically turn off all of your electrical devices. So I would start there with the starter relay.
