Alaska used to belong to Russia. Alaska is very close to Russia, and is believed to have been connected to Russia by the Bering Land Bridge. The United States, at the behest of Secretary of State William Seward, bought Alaska in 1867 for $7,200,000 (according to the Wikipedia article on the Alaska Purchase).

The US consists of the central and lower part of North America. In the northern part of North America, Britain settled what is now Canada beginning in the east and then gradually moving westward.

The Russians settled the far Western part in what is now Alaska, which was very close to their nation.

In the mid 1800s, Russia decided it did not want to spend the money necessary to develop and protect Alaska. Russia didn't want to sell Alaska to the English, who were the superpower of that time period, so they asked the US to buy Alaska. The US bought it at a super cheap price despite the fact that Alaska did not border any other US state.

So Alaska wasn't part of the normal process for US states where people settled in them, formed a territory, then became a state. Alaska was a purchase by the US at a very favorable price.

The British claimed the territory between Alaska and the US before the US reached Washington state. This territory and the territory of New France were not involved in the American Revolution, and slowly developed into Canada over the next 150 years or so.

It does touch America, just not the United States thereof.
