Adam, father to the whole of the human race, was formed from the soil of Israel. Adam was not, according to the Bible, created in Eden; God formed him from the earth that is now Israel and he PLACED Adam there AFTER he was created. Because the whole of Judaism revolves around the lineage of Adam, the last of that lineage being the Messiah, Israel is of vital importance to religious minded Jews.

Answer 1

-- Since 2001, the US has spent several trillion dollars and several thousand lives in our attempt to build nations in the Middle East, that have stable democratic representative governments, equal rights for all citizens, and little or no threat to their stability from insurgent forces, and are friendly toward the US. It must be pretty important for the US to have some of those in that part of the world.

-- There is one nation in the Middle East that built itself at no expense to the US, has a stable, representative, democratic government, has equal rights for all citizens written into its law, has had no threat to its stability from within and several orderly transfers of government since it was founded more than 60 years ago, and is friendly toward the US.

It's Israel.

Does it make sense to say that Israel has made itself what we would so dearly love to see in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Egypt, but it's not important to us ?

Answer 2

The United States support for the State of Israel comes from a variety of sources. Israel has cooperated with the United States on diplomatic issues, military and intelligence exchanges, large amounts of trade, and significant technological investment. In addition there a numerous Americans who support the State of Israel because of religious convictions on top of the already-listed reasons.

Since ancient times: Israel's importance lies only in the fact that it was part of God's covenant (Genesis 15 and 17). Without that, it (as an Asian-African corridor) would be seen as not more important than any other very strategic strip of real estate, of which the world has many (such as the Isthmus of Panama, the Straits of Gibraltar, Saudi oil fields, etc).

In more recent times:

In addition to the above and because of it, various populations (Crusaders, Ottomans, British, Jews, Muslims) have stridently vied for possession or governance of the land which is today (again) called Israel. Thus, it is never far from news headlines.
