Does Neomycin or Polymyxin B have penicillin in it?

Polymyxin B does not have penicillin in it, I just called my local pharmacy to ask that question and the answer is no. I should note, however, that the reason I called my pharmacist was because I used a topical ointment that contained Polymyxin B and had a very severe allergic reaction immediately after applying the ointment. I have anaphylaxis to penicillin and thought it may contain penicillin, but the pharmacist tells me it does not. He did advise me to go see my allergist again as I may have developed an allergy to another antibiotic but assured me there is no penicillin in Polymyxin B. Can't help with Neomycin, sorry!

What is neopolybac-h?

It is a triple antibiotic ointment used topically (on the skin or ear surface) to treat bacterial infections. The name is a shortening of the three active ingredients: neomycin, polymyxin B and bacitracin.

What is in triple antibiotic ointment?

Triple antibiotic ointment usually contains bacitracin, polymixin and neomycin in a petrolatum base. There may be some other minor ingredients, but those are the "triple antibiotic" part of the ointment. Those 3 antibiotics help to stop bacterial infections by both compromising the bacterial cell walls and also inhibiting the protein synthesis of the bacteria. The bacteria needs the its cell with to live and protein synthesis to grow and thrive.

What is neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and bacitracin zinc ophthalmic ointment and can it be used on a horse?

Neomycin, Polymyxin b sulfates, and bacitracin zinc ophthalmic ointments are typically sold as 'triple antibiotics' they each treat bacterial infections and work in conjuncture with each other to kill bacterial infections. Yes they can be used on horses, you can get name brand or generic products that contain all three (hence the 'triple antibiotic' label). However you should consult your equine veterinarian before using any medication on or near a horses eyes.

Do you need a prescription for bacitracin?

Baciguent is available over the counter. But another popular brand name Neosporin contains Bacitracin as one of its antibiotic agents along with Neomycin and Polymyxin B. Bacitracin can also be bought in pure form for those with allergies. Bacitracin is commonly used in combination with other topical antibiotics (usually polymyxin B and neomycin), it is used in ointment form for topical treatment of a variety of localized skin and eye infections, as well as for the prevention of wound infections. It is also commonly used as an aftercare antibiotic on tattoos. It is preferred over Neosporin because of its fewer ingredients, which lowers chances of an allergic reaction. In infants, it is sometimes administered intramuscularly for the treatment of pneumonias. This formulation is sold under the brand name Baciim. Clinical Note: This is a good alternative to Silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene) for burn patients with Sulfa-Allergy.

Is triple antibiotic ointment and polysporin ointment the same?

No...triple antibiotic (neosporin) is bacitracin, neomycin, & polymixin B. Polysporin is bacitacin and polymixin B. Very similar though, just not identical!

Who invented neosporin?

Neosporin (from neo, (Greek) new + sporos, (Greek) seed) is an antibiotic product marketed for the prevention of infections and speeding the healing of wounds.Concern exists that the use of Neosporin contributes to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In the US, the only large market for Neosporin, the ointment has been shown to promote the prevalence of MRSA bacteria,[1] specifically the highly lethal ST8:USA300strain.[2]The original ointment contains three different antibiotics: bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B, in a relatively low-molecular-weight patented base of cocoa butter, cottonseed oil, sodium pyruvate, tocopheryl acetate, and petroleum jelly. The generic name for these products, regardless of the base, is "triple antibiotic ointment". In China, this product is called "complex polymyxin B ointment," which is manufactured by Zhejiang Reachall Pharmaceutical. The product was also marketed by the Upjohn Company under the name "Mycitracin", until 1997 when that name was acquired by Johnson & Johnson.[3]Some people have allergic reactions to neomycin, so a "double antibiotic ointment" is sold that contains only bacitracin and polymyxin B, such as the cobrand Polysporin.A "Plus" variant of the ointment exists that adds the analgesic pramoxine, but uses the cheap, simple, long-lasting, but heavier petroleum jelly base common to many over-the-counter topicals. The latest version of this, a high-absorption cream, removes the bacitracin, which is unstable in such a base, but keeps the analgesic.
