Exercise gets your heart used to beating quickly. As the heart is a muscle it needs to be used. The more it is used the stronger and more efficient it becomes at pumping blood. The increased blood flow that exercise causes (due to more oxygen being needed) cleans out extra cholesterol that may be in your blood vessels. Extra cholesterol is one of the courses of strokes and heart attacks.

If you haven't played a sport for twenty years but you just sit behind a desk all the time, if you start intense exercise your heart would not be used to it. Your heart would beat faster and faster until it ultimately could not handle it and it would form a blood clot. Soon after your heart would not be able to beat thus creating heart attack. So the point is you should exercise to prevent this scenario from becoming reality.

Table Tennis (ping pong) is an awesome exercise for the heart, plus its easy on joints.

Answer 2: Start off by just walking, add more distance each time you walk. Put pep in your step and increase your speed. Walking uses all muscle groups. Do deep breathing in and out so you do not get winded while walking. You will be amazed at how you will feel after walking and any form of exercise.
