• The Murray River used to be called the Hume, after it was first discovered by explorers Hume and Hovell in 1824. the two men then proceeded to argue for some years about whether Hovell named it for Hume, or Hume named it for his father.
• It was renamed when Captain Charles Sturt followed the Murrumbidgee into the Murray in 1829. he named it after the British Secretary of State for the Colonies, hoping to curry favour with this onscure British statesman who showed absolutely no interest whatsoever.

He departed Goolwa on 25 August 1853, travelling 2,200km upstream, reaching Swan Hill on September 17. Cadell's competitor, William Randell, built his own 17m paddlesteamer 'Mary Ann' at Gumeracha and Mannum, with a single 8hp engine and a square boiler. Randell reached Swan Hill several hours behind Cadell, after the two had raced neck-and-neck most of the way.
