Virginia is important to America because it is the cornerstone of American history. People landed and settled in Virginia first, the growth of the 13 colonies spread out from Virginia, and it is the land of ideas were the decleration of independece and constitution was first thought of and established in Virginia.

Virginia was a key part of the Confederacy for the following reasons:

* it had the only major iron works factory which could make artillery located in Richmond;

* most of the supplies that came from the south came in through the Petersburg railways;

* the Shenandoah Valley was the largest food producer for the Confederacy;

* it had the largest population of any Southern state; and

* many of the more effective Confederate generals came from Virginia such as Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
