I took my car to the Honda dealership to have my ignition lock replaced due to a recall, which I thought was the issue. The dealership, however, told me it was due to a faulty brake lamp indicator and charged me $42 for the part and $90 for an hour of labor.
This is to prevent the car from going into gear when it is not meant to. You must have the key in the on position before you can move the vehicle out of park.
i got a Honda accord 1998 model and it will not get of park
The transmission is equipped with a relay switch that senses when the brake is applied. If the sensor is bad the transmission will not shift out of park.
Park the truck further away from the Honda.
There are a couple of reasons why a 1998 Honda Accord may be stuck in park. The immobilizer system may need to be replaced or the transmission is having problems.
You must press and hold the brake pedal to take the shifter out of park.
My 1998 Honda Accord LX was getting stuck intermittently in Park. I found that the switch that turns on the brake light when you press the bake pedal was going out. This switch is $32.00 at any Honda dealer and most importantly YOU can change it yourself. Ironically, that same switch activates the gear shifter pin that lets you take it in and out of gear.
Find the Shifter Lock Override Slot. It'll be under a cap. Remove the cap, push down on the lever inside with a nail file or something, and shift into neutral.
because the light is the indicator that the transmission has locked into place, if it doesnt then the transmission will give you hell...
please remember to always have your foot on the brake.. and your vehicle in park this is part of honda's safety interlock system.
Sounds like its starting off in second not in drive
I have a 1998 Accord and I think if you cannot get the shifter out of park, it is a problem with the brake light switch. I need to look into that, but currently, I just stick a key into the shift lock and unlock it to shift out of park. I believe that turning on the headlights (with the tail lights) will also make sure that the brake lights work. Anyways, pry the plastic border around the shifter on the console off. It is on the console to the left of the transmission letters (P, N, D4, D3, 1, 2).
