Live things that reproduce are very effective at that. They overproduce and only a small percentage of new life reaches the level where they are now able to reproduce. Many living species reproduce and then die after only one cycle of life, consequently, they have to reproduce enormous quantities so that enough of the progeny will be around to repeat this for years to come. On the other hand, there are species that only reproduce once a year but deliver only one infant. Occasionally there may be twins or more but this is not that common. Not rare, just not commonplace. Humans have to protect their progeny for a number of years because the infants are not capable of doing this for them self. They also rely on mother's milk for survival, therefore, the mother has to nurse for a few years (remember this was invented before stores sold baby food) and has to be able to take care of the baby for a long time. This makes her less able to nurture multiple infants if she had one every year. She has fewer kids in her lifetime as opposed to some animals that are delivered and are on their own from the first day. This means more of her progeny live for a while before a predator gets them, as happened many years ago.

The shorter the natural lifespan of the species the faster they reproduce. From fertilization to living progeny is measured in days for some mammals like mice, however, they reproduce many offspring at each litter. They also have a short lifespan in nature because they are preyed upon by so many other species. When crops do well so do the mice in that area, to the extent there are many situations where there seemed to be an epidemic of mice as in millions in a small area. Gestation is very short and litters are relatively large.


The features noted above are a partly due to genetics, however, this started as a result of random events like natural radiation, and the laws of natural selection. Some individuals were delivered with "abnormalities" but this abnormality enabled them to thrive and now were able to produce more of the same consequently, we how have another species. This system was so successful that we are now over run with many species as a result of transferring some species from one area where they thrive to stop another infestation of a species that is so successful that they have become a nuisance. The number of species of birds in Hawaii is small because of some snakes introduced by accident. Some snakes like to eat birds and the ones introduced in Hawaii are evidently good at this.
