It is not that people prefer
using one or the the other, it is that they are used for different purposes.
Active sentences tell us who did
the action of the verb. They have the form: subject + verb + object
eg The dog chased the cat.
Passive sentences allow us to put something that is not the doer of the verb in the subject position.
eg The cat was chased
You can if you want, say who or what chased the cat by adding the agent at the end of the sentence.
eg The cat was chased by the dog
Passive is used when the actor/agent is not important or is not known. Often when describing a process passive is used
eg Tea is grown in Sri Lanka. It is picked and taken to processing plants where it is dried and packed for export
Or if the actor is the most important bit of information we can add it at the end for emphasis.
The Mona Lisa is a very well known painting. It was painted by Leonardo da vinci
Active voice is typically preferred because it is more direct, engaging, and clearer than passive voice. It emphasizes the subject performing the action, making the sentence more dynamic and engaging for readers. Passive voice can sometimes be ambiguous or awkward, making it less effective for clear communication.
The sentence "The pen was missing" is in passive voice, as the subject (the pen) is receiving the action (being missing) rather than performing it.
The active subject is the noun or pronoun that performs the action in a sentence. The passive subject is the noun or pronoun that receives the action in a sentence, rather than performing it.
A verb is said to be in the passive voice when the subject of the sentence is acted upon by the verb, rather than performing the action. In passive voice constructions, the focus is on the recipient of the action rather than the doer. A common indicator of passive voice is the inclusion of a form of "be" (e.g., is, was, were) with the past participle of the main verb.
This is a passive sentence because the subject (dollars) is being acted upon rather than performing the action.
The sentence "The eggs were thrown" is in the passive voice, as the subject (eggs) receives the action (thrown) rather than performing it.
They prefer to be the receiver rather than the giver. They prefer being penetrated rather than penetrating.
The sentence "Private First Class Thomas broke the window" is in the active voice, where the subject (Private First Class Thomas) performs the action (broke the window).
Places in a passive rather than an active role, which hinders learning.
Active voice is when the subject of a sentence performs the action, while passive voice is when the subject is acted upon by the verb. In active voice, the sentence structure follows a subject-verb-object pattern, whereas in passive voice, the object becomes the subject and the verb is conjugated as a form of "to be" plus the past participle of the main verb.
Active voice makes writing more direct, engaging, and easier to understand by clearly showing who is performing the action. Passive voice can make sentences wordy, less dynamic, and can obscure the subject of the sentence. Overall, using active voice often results in clearer and more compelling writing.
Using the active voice rather than passive voice
Sentences written in active voice are clearer and more straightforward than those written in passive voice. In active voice, the subject is doing something rather than having something done to them. An example of passive voice is, "He was reading the book his cousin had written." Active voice may read, "He's reading the book his cousin wrote."
Samsung, like the majority of manufacturers only makes active 3D tvs. LG and Toshiba make passive 3D TVs. Although there is debate over the better technology, manufacturers are supporting active 3D more than passive. It has had some teething trouble in its early days but recent developments have made it far more robust and the once heavy glasses are now as light as many of the passive glasses.
With a passive verb, the subject receives the action.
they prefer neither they rather suck lollipops and drink beer
no people rather prefer gang or den
I prefer to have Old People as my neighbors rather than young people.
