Why shouldn't an impact wrench be used in place of a torque wrench?

An Impact wrench is for a totally different use. A torque wrench will let the user know when a certain torque has been achieved in tightening. The impact wrench is for removing very tough nuts under impact of a hammer.

It depends on the application, if you are speaking generally.If you meant for applications where the bolt and nut are both present, and specific torque specifications are required, it really doesn't matter. Whichever is best accessible by the torque wrench. The only stipulation is that whichever item the torque wrench is not being used on, must be static (unable to turn). For example, if you are torquing the nut, the bolt must not be able to turn (held in place with a wrench, if necessary) while the torque wrench is being read, for a reading to be accurate.

Honestly, a 1/2 in. impact wrench, with the impact socket that fits the nut. Could be a 28mm,30mm,32mm... or so. Use a torque wrench to install the new nut--over tightening can lead to bearing damage. Don't forget to punch the notch in on the nut to lock it in place. Use a new nut if possible. There's only about 90 lb-ft of torque on one of these nuts, so a socket on an 18" breaker bar works fine.

There are a couple different methods to correctly torque the nut on the pinion. One way that I have used in the past with excellent results,is to tighten the pinion nut real good and snug just as you feel the crush sleeve begin its resistance,and then you actually place an "inch pound" torque wrench(Dial or Bar style tends to be a little quicker and more exacting than a click style) with correct socket on pinion nut and rotate the pinion by way of the smaller torque wrench (ring gear and carrier removed).If the inch-pound torque wrench doesn't click before the pinion rotates(inch-pound wrench set approx @12-15),then snug the pinoin nut up with your 1/2 drive impact more.Tighten nut in SMALL increments.Dont overshoot it,other wise you run the risk of wasting the one time use crush sleeve and burning up the pinion bearings.If say the wrench clicks @10,11,12ish before the pinion rotates,but if set @ 15 or so,and the pinion rotates before the torque wrench clicks, you are in the right area.What you are doing is measuring the amount of "rotational drag" on the pinion with the inlb torque wrench.Another way is if the crush sleeve is replaced with a solid spacer,the nut can be torqued down with a regular pop wrench to about 60-75 ft/lbs.

The longer handle gives you more leverage. You use Force to push or pull an object in an attempt to make it move. When you want to cause something to rotate (tighten or loosen a nut for example), you need Torque. Torque = the force you apply to your spanner times the distance your hand is from the nut you are trying to turn. Thus, if you have a longer spanner, you can place your hand farther from the nut and the Torque on the nut will increase. You have to be careful about long handled wrenches or slipping a piece of pipe over a wrench to make it longer as you can generate so much Torque that you can snap the bolt clean off or strip the threads. If you have to tighten a nut/bolt very firmly, but don't want to strip/snap it, you can use a Torque Wrench. It has a gauge that tells you how much Torque you are applying to the nut/bolt so that you can tighten it to specifications without going over.

You will need an extension for a socket, the correct socket (I think 5/8 will work), and a torque wrench. First, use the extension and socket to screw onto the spark plug. Once it becomes too hard to turn it by hand use the torque wrench. Once the plug is out, take your new one (I recommend NGK) and thread it into place without using the torque wrench. Then once it is too hard by hand use the wrench and tighten to the recommended number (most likely 19 N). Repeat for the other three plugs. If I were you I would also put anti-sieze lubricant on the threads of the new spark plugs. This will make it easier to remove the plugs next time around.
