The first English settlers came in 1633. They were Puritans from Massachusetts, led by the Puritan reverend Thomas Hooker. They founded the Connecticut Colony in 1636. It was admitted as one of the original Thirteen Colonies in 1788. The name is based on Mohican and Algonquin Indian words for a "place beside a long river"

It might have something to do with a great Indian Chief Canonicus of the Naraghansetts. Canonicus(kunon'ikus), c.1565-1647, Native North American chief, who ruled the Narragansett when the Pilgrims landed in New England. He granted (1636) Rhode Island to Roger Williams and because of William's influence remained friendly to the settlers, despite their aggressive ways. Quinnehtukqut - Mohegan for "Long River Place" or "Beside the Long Tidal River" - source Connecticut govt website The word Connecticut came from Whalley, Goffe, and Dixwell who had fled England because of persecution there.
