George Washington showed up in Congress in uniform and cited his past experience in the French and Indian war as a British officer. They appointed him as the commander of all American military forces.
On June 14, 1775, two months into the war, the original Continental Army was formed from militia units around Boston, some of which were from Washington's home state of Virginia.

While this is true, there were many other leaders from the French and Indian war that had just as much, or more experience in warfare. The main reason as to why he was chosen was because he was from Virginia. Up until the point where the Continental Army needed a commanding officer, the States were by and large, not in a "unified" mindset. Additionally, most of the conflict was occurring in Massachusetts, so none of the other colonies were really feeling the effects of the Acts of Intoleration and taxes. By picking someone from Virginia, this started the idea of a unified effort. In short, it was mostly for socio-political reasons.
