What was the primary reason that George Washington was chosen to lead the continental army?

On June 14, 1775, two months into the war, the original Continental Army was formed from militia units around Boston, some of which were from Washington's home state of Virginia.

Additionally, most of the conflict was occurring in Massachusetts, so none of the other colonies were really feeling the effects of the Acts of Intoleration and taxes. By picking someone from Virginia, this started the idea of a unified effort. In short, it was mostly for socio-political reasons.
